About Sunburst Soaps

My interest in soapmaking was an extension of my love of gardening and herblore. I actually had joined a gardening book club, and had to pick out 4 free books - one of those books was Norma Coney's. The pictures were so vivid and beautiful. The descriptions of how nice the soap was were convincing. Thank goodness I did some research before I made my first batch :) It took me a good year to decide what kind of soap I wanted to make, and to get enough information from experienced soapmakers so that I felt comfortable with the process. And I had to buy different pieces of equipment and ingredients.

My first batch of soap was a baby mild recipe. It was fun making it - I've always loved cooking. And it turned out so beautifully. It was creamy white and smooth. When I finally got to use it, I knew this was something I wanted to do many more times. The lather was soft and thick, and my skin felt so good when I was done washing. As a matter of fact, I
thought something was wrong, because I didn't have that squeaky feeling when I was done washing that you get with regular soap. Little did I know that the squeaky feeling was because all the oils of my skin had been stripped!

I have had psoriasis since I was a young teenager. My skin condition has waxed and waned throughout the years, getting worse in the winter and during times of stress, and completely going away during pregnancy (that's why I have four children!). When I started using my own soap, I
saw an improvement of my skin. Maybe it was the soap, maybe it was the stress relief I got making soap, who knows? But then, I discovered lotions. Someone on a mail list posted a recipe for a "psoriasis lotion" and that intrigued me. So I made it. Another world opened up for me.
Not only was it great to be able to make lotions and creams, this recipe really helped my skin. Now I have occasional dryness or cracking. And it is rarely a problem for more than a day.

Most of the products I make have been learned through the love and sharing of other soapmakers. I have learned more from the lists I am a member of than I ever learned from the numerous books I have in my library. I believe the soapmaking community is a group of gifted, caring, and generous people. I think the main reason that my interest in this business has been so long-lasting is the fact that I feel like I am a part of a larger whole - people who care about people, people who
want other people to feel good, people who want the world to be a better smelling place!
